Search Committee Letter to Rutgers Community

Dear Rutgers Faculty, Students, Staff, and Alumni,

As most of you know, in July, Dr. Robert Barchi informed the Board of Governors and members of the Rutgers community of his intention to step down from the presidency at the conclusion of the 2019-20 academic year. For the past seven years, President Barchi has been a gifted steward of Rutgers University during a period of extraordinary growth and dynamic change. Under his leadership, Rutgers has become academically stronger and more diverse. It has extended its outreach across New Jersey and around the world. Capital construction totaled $2.5 billion during his presidency, and multiple improvements to Rutgers’ financial and administrative operations have been instituted. Most importantly, Rutgers has solidified its reputation as an internationally renowned, comprehensive public research university.

In the search for Dr. Barchi’s successor, we seek another talented and visionary leader who will build upon Rutgers’s past progress, and successfully shepherd the University toward a future with an abundance of opportunities and challenges. The Search Committee invites your help in identifying the attributes and experiences befitting Rutgers’ next president. In the near future, we will be announcing a set of campus Town Halls. These meetings are designed to involve you in the selection process. We want your input regarding the characteristics and qualifications of a successful candidate, the opportunities or challenges of the position that you want the Committee to be mindful of as we consider candidates, and any other factors that you think relevant to the search. We urge you to attend one of these events and to participate either in person or electronically. You are also invited to share your perspectives by email at presidentialsearch@rutgers.edu

In addition, if you know of qualified individuals who you believe have leadership abilities required for this position, please nominate them by submitting their name, title, and contact information directly to the Search Firm, R. William Funk & Associates, at krisha.creal@rwilliamfunk.comPlease do not contact potential candidates directly to ascertain their interest or encourage them to apply; multiple contacts from different people can become unwieldy and confusing, and may inadvertently discourage an otherwise qualified candidate from considering the opportunity. While the search committee is engaged in this process and may seem to be a natural point of contact, nominations of candidates should be made directly to the search firm for clear communication and coordination. Also, please keep in mind the need for all of these contacts and suggestions to remain strictly confidential, both to protect the identity of potential candidates and to ensure the integrity of the search.

Thank you in advance for your support and input. We expect to move quickly and efficiently to find a strong set of candidates for the position, with the hope that we can appoint the next Rutgers President by the summer of 2020.

Very truly yours,

The Presidential Search Committee
